A Miraculous Church

Today's Insight in the Word -
In Acts 11, we find the record of the church in Antioch. It was a church that experienced the supernatural work of God resulting in Jews and Greeks being saved to make up the church. Until this point of the early church, this had never been experienced. The disciples were "proclaiming the good news about the Lord Jesus. The Lord's hand was with them, and a large number who believed turned to the Lord." (11:20,21). Barnabas came to Antioch to "encourage the new believers to remain true to the Lord with a firm resolve of heart... and large numbers of people were added to the Lord.... and the disciples were first called Christians in Antioch." vs.23-26.

Antioch was a Miraculous church because....
  • People who know Christ..... from different ethnic backgrounds were being saved and brought together in the body of Christ.
  • People were growing in Christ by the teaching of Barnabas.
  • New believers were showing Christ.... the Romans labeled them Christians or little Christs because they were sufficiently recognizable by beliefs and actions in keeping with their leader, the Lord Jesus Christ.
Application of the Word to Life -
The church of Antioch is the vision for the future of Plant City's First Baptist Church ... being a church where the hand of God is with us, resulting in large numbers of people who know Christ, are growing in Christ, and are showing Christ .... in such a way that the unsaved would call us 'little Christs' for we resemble the Lord Jesus so much in our daily lives.

Prayer Response to the Word -
Abba Father, How I long for Your face to shine with all of Your glory on Your church and that Your hand might be with us resulting in large numbers in Plant City knowing Christ, growing in Him, and showing His love. Thank you for showing me a glimpse of what the future holds here at First Baptist. May Your vision be fulfilled in Your church I pray in Jesus' name. Amen!

A model for shepherding God's people

We continue to receive good reports of our high school students in St. John Virgin Islands of how God is using them to conduct VBS, construction, and evangelistic efforts. I so look forward to gathering with God's people in our "House of Prayer" this evening at 6:30 p.m.!

Today's Insight in the Word -
Psalm 78:70-72 - "He chose David His servant and took him from the sheepfolds; He brought him from tending ewes to be shepherd over His people Jacob - over Israel, His inheritance. He shepherded them with a pure heart and guided them with his skillful hands."
  • God called and commissioned David to lead His people. Spiritual leadership is a divine calling, and it is the Lord alone who initiates by His grace a spiritual leader of His people.
  • God's calling is always from the temporary activities of life to the eternal... from tending sheep to leading God's people in His will.
  • God is most interested in the character of the leader, not just his activity as a leader. 'a pure heart' David lead the people... as well as 'his skillful hands.'
Application of the Word to Life -
David is a model of leadership which I desire to follow - i.e. - .... spiritual leadership that is called by God. I remember God's calling of grace in my life as He saved me and called me to preach His Word and lead His people. "Purity of heart" is the longing of my life.. to be a vessel set apart and useful to God. "Skillfulness of hands" is my prayer each day as I shepherd the flock of God over whom the Lord has appointed me as an overseer.

Prayer Response to the Word -
O Lord, Who am I and what is my father's household that You call me to lead Your People of First Baptist Church? I am so grateful that You have called me from the fleeting activities of this life to the eternal work of Your church and kingdom to preach the Word and lead Your people! Give me continually a pure heart and skillful hands, I pray in Jesus' name. Amen!

Personal and Corperate Revival

God is more eager to give a spiritual revival than many times we are ready to receive it. Yet I sense a longing of our hearts at FBC for the movement of His Spirit in our hearts resulting in times of refreshing from the presence of the Lord.

Today's Insight in the Word -
2 Kings 22,23 - Josiah, the young king of Judah, is a wonderful description of a work of God in his personal life that brought about a national revival among the people.
  • Josiah was a leader who did what was right in the Lord's sight and walked in the ways of David - 22:2
  • Josiah had a desire to repair the damaged Temple of the Lord, and as the workers were repairing it, they discovered the lost law of God.... 22:8
  • Josiah inquired of the Lord and prayed for God's direction in response the newly discovered law of God... he responded to the Word obediently 22:13
  • Josiah humbled himself and lead the people in repentance before God 22:19... he renewed the covenant with God, repented of and destroyed all the acts of idolatry, observed the Passover.... chapter 23.
Application of the Word to Life -
When the Word of God is discovered and responded to obediently in a believer's life, life-change results which is the fruit of revival! I will seek each day to discover God's Word, respond in obedience, and live in a continual state of revival... repenting of any known sin.

Prayer Response to the Word -
O Father God, You are looking for just one whose heart is loyal to you, and I desire by Your grace for my heart to be a place where You look towards. As I read of this account of Josiah, I long for this personal and cooperate revival to occur in our day. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen!

Vision Statement for First Baptist Church...

The Lord was once again exalted in the worship of His people at FBC. Both the morning and evening services were blessed by His presence and life-change is taking place. As God's people, we are once again rediscovering the 'altar' of God which alters our life by turning to Him. I am overwhelmed by God's goodness and grace of the Lord's calling of me to Plant City.

Today's Insight in the Word -
Acts 9:31 - is a summary statement used by Dr. Luke as He records the acts of the Holy Spirit in the early church. He states, "So the church throughout all Judea, Galilee, and Samaria had peace, being built up and walking in the fear of the Lord and in the encouragement of the Holy Spirit, and it increased in numbers."

This is a great vision for God's church at FBC.... peace, edification, walking in the fear of the Lord and encouragement of the Holy Spirit, being increased in numbers. - i.e. - A people who KNOW Christ, GROW in Christ, and SHOW Christ's love.

Application of the Word to life -
The vision God is placing in my heart for First Baptist Church is to be a church 'that bears lasting fruit.' (John 15:16).... By being a people who is continually KNOWING Christ, GROWING in Christ, and SHOWING Christ's love.
My heart is to lead the church to spiritual growth of every member which results in numerical growth of new believers being added to the body of FBC.

Prayer Response to the Word -
O Father God, my earnest prayer on this Monday morning is that First Baptist church will continue to have peace, being built up and walking in the fear of the Lord and in the encouragement of the Holy Spirit. May every member experience this work of Your amazing grace. And May You add to the church those that will be saved. I pray in Jesus' name. Amen!

Special Prayer - Let's continue to pray for our 40 plus students on mission with Christ in the St. John's Virgin Islands, Cindy Churchill in the passing of her mother, and Dr. Churchill as he begins a new interim pastorate in Sun City.

Sermon Notes for July 5, 2009 AM Service,
"Revival of Trust" 2 Chronicles 7 : 14

1. The People Where Revival begins. We are a …
A. People Redeemed by God
B. People Related to God
C. People Responsible to God.

2. The Process to experience Revival. Consider the process of revival as given by God:
A. Humility
B. Prayer
C. Seeking God’s face
D. Repentance

3. The Promise of God for Revival to aResponsive People.Consider 3 promises of revival:
A. God will hear from heaven
B. God will forgive our sin
C. God will heal our land

“Beyond Sunday” Challenges –
1. Ask the Lord to begin revival in you. Draw a circle on the floor, kneel inside the circle, and ask the Lord to begin revival in you.

2. Follow Evan Roberts counsel from 1905Welch revival…
· You must put away any unconfessed sin.
· You must put away any doubtful habit.
· You must obey the Holy Spirit promptly.
· You must confess Christ publically.

3. Commit 2 Chronicles 7:14 to memory and pray through the continual process of revival for First Baptist Church and our community.

4. Devote time in prayer with a group of believers who are burdened for revival.

Hope given to the Hopeless

Today's Insight in the Word -
Acts 9:1 - the situation seemed hopeless for the early church - "Saul breathing threats and murder against the disciples of the Lord.... if he sound any who belonged to the Way, he might bring them as prisoners to Jerusalem." But then Hope appeared.....the light of heaven appeared to Saul and he encountered the Living Lord Jesus who said to him, "I am Jesus, who you are persecuting..."
vs.21 - After Saul began proclaiming Jesus, the Bible states, "all who heard him were astounded and said, 'Isn't this the man who was destroying those who called on this name...?'"
Wow!

Application of the Word to Life -
God is the Lord of hope. Those who are in hopeless situations God is able to give hope and deliverance as they trust in His Word. Those who are hopelessly lost in sin and the blindness of religion can find hope in the Living Son of God. My purpose in life is to share the hope of Christ with the hopeless. The hope that has changed my life forever!

Prayer Response of the Word -
Father God, I rejoice in Your love and grace that changed the persecutor Saul to the great apostle Paul. Your grace has transformed my life from a meaningless existence to a life full of meaning and purpose. May I preach the living hope today of the Lord Jesus who is risen from the dead. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen!

Looking forward to Tomorrow at FBC!

I am earnestly praying and longing for God's presence in worship tomorrow with us at Plant City's First Baptist Church! In the morning, I will continue in our "In God We Trust" series as I preach on "Revival of Trust" from 2 Chronicles 7:12-14; it is a Word from the Lord for our day! Our worship center is decorated in Red, White, and Blue and our worship ministry will lead us in seeking God's face as we pray for the healing of our land.
In our evening service at 6:30, I will be preaching from Joel chapter 2 on "Blowing the Trumpet in Zion." In our previous Sunday evening service, we had a visitation from heaven in a movement of prayer and brokenness. I anticipate a great day of worship at FBC as we exalt a great Savior, our Lord Jesus Christ! I look forward to seeing you...

Blessed 4th of July!

Happy Birthday America!

Today we celebrate our nation's 233rd birthday! We are such a young nation, yet God has allowed us to accomplish much in our short history. Let's pray for our nation that repentance toward God and faith in our Lord Jesus Christ would be experienced.

Today's Insight in the Word -
Why did God allow the nation of Israel in the Old Testament to be destroyed and taken away in Exile by Assyria and Babylon?
2 Kings 17: 7ff gives the answer - "This disaster happened because the people of Israel had sinned against the Lord their God... because they had worshipped other gods. They lived according to the customs of the nations ..... The Israelites secretly did what was not right against the Lord their God. They built high places.... they set up for themselves sacred pillars... they served idols... the Lord warned Israel and Judah through every prophet and every seer.... But they would not listen... They pursued worthless idols and became worthless themselves.... They worshipped Baal.... they made their sons and daughters pass through the fire and practiced divination and interpreted omens...."

Today's Application to Walk in the Word -
God is not a respecter of persons in His judgment on sin. Sin in the lives of His people as well as sins in the lives of unbelievers will be judged. God will not be mocked, for whatever a person sows that he also shall reap. I will walk in the fear of the Lord, knowing the great disaster that came on Israel.... seeking to worship the Lord only and put away all idols of culture around me.

Prayer Response to the Word -
Father God, I bow before You on this our nation's 233rd birthday and confess that we as a people of the US have departed from You. We have exalted man as an idol in the place of worshipping You the one true God. Your church has taken on the customs of our culture, and we have departed from Your Word. Our children are being sacrificed to the gods of convienience in abortions. O God, have mercy on us. Turn our hearts back to You and begin a great revival of repentance in our day. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen!

The Best and the Worst of Times

Pray for our Senior high student who leave today to minister in the impoverished areas of the St. John Virgin Islands. Picture is of our recent VBS worship at FBC!

Today's Insight into Scripture -
In Acts chapter 8, we find the early church was experiencing the best and the worst of times at the same time. It was the worse of times in the severe persecution of one Saul... who agreed with the stoning of Stephen and who was ravaging the church, dragging off mean and women and putting them in prison (8:1-4). Yet it was the best of times in that "those who were scattered went on their way proclaiming the message of good news." And Philip even carried the Gospel from Jerusalem and now is going to Samaria, which was the first in cross-cultural missions! As people were being saved in Samaria, the Bible states, "So there was great joy in that city." vs.8

Today's Application of Scripture to life -
Today is the best of times, in that we can proclaim the Gospel anywhere to anyone without fear of threat of persecution and imprisonment. Yet it is the worst of times in that so few Christ-followers are actually proclaiming the Good News. Very few professing Christians in our churches have ever shared the Gospel with another person and lead them to faith in Christ!
Yet over in Muslim and Communist countries where the law forbids believers from proclaiming the Gospel, the Gospel is spreading and new believers are multiplying.
How can we reconcile the fact that the church is growing in every part of the world except in the United States?
Could it be that the stage is being set for a spiritual awakening? May it be, Lord! Awaken your Church, O Living God!

Prayer Response to the Word -
Father God, Revive Your Church that Your people may proclaim Your Gospel to all peoples! I long to be an instrument of revival and spiritual awakening in our day. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen!

In God Do We Really Trust?

Last evening I returned home following a Spirit-led "House of Prayer" to 50 middle school students in our home! It was lots of fun. Our family is so blessed to be a vital part of our students lives and encourage them in Christ.

Today's Insight in the Word -
Psalm 78: 22 - The Israelites in the wilderness continued to rebel against the Lord in the wilderness, speaking words of unbelief, saying, "Is God able to provide food in the wilderness?"... God was grieved with His people, "Because they did not believe God or rely on His salvation."

Do you think God's Spirit is grieved when His people today in the New Covenant do not believe or rely wholly on Him? The question is, "Do we really trust in God as Christ-followers?" Of course, our nation is no longer trusting in God, but what about His church?

Do we believe God is able to bring a spiritual awakening in our country? Do we believe the promise of 2 Chronicles 7:14 and are we open to meet the conditions for a revival in our churches?

Application of the Word to Life -
I do not want to stand in the way of revival by an unbelieving heart, but I desire to be a conduit of revival by a broken and yielded heart to the will of God.

Prayer Response to the Word -
O God, bend me! I desire not my will, but Your will to be done. I believe and trust in You, for You are able forgive our sins and heal our land. Revive Your church, O God, that Your people may rejoice in Thee. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen!

Pray for this Lord's day at FBC as I preach from the text 2 Chronicles 7:11-14 - the Process and promises of revival in trusting God.

The blessing of Joseph's life

I am so anticipating our time together in prayer this afternoon during "The House of Prayer!" God moves in mighty ways through the cooperate prayers of His people.

Today's Insight in the Word -
In Acts 7, Stephen is giving an address to the Sanhedrin as a defence of His preaching in the name of Jesus. Stephen simply retraces God's acts of redemption through history to lead up to the coming of the Lord Jesus Christ. In his survey, he mentions Joseph who was sold into Egypt by his jealous brothers, "But God was with him and rescued him out of all his troubles. He gave him favor and wisdom in the sight of Pharaoh, king of Egypt, who appointed him governor over Egypt and over his whole household."

The blessing of Joseph's life was the reality of the presence of God with him and the power of God to deliver him from all his troubles.

Application of the Word to Life -
The blessing of Christ-followers lives is the Lord is always with us.... through every difficulty, every misunderstanding, every disappointment, every mystery of life. Not only is He with us, but He will 'rescue us from all our troubles,' for Jesus promised that in this world we would have troubles, but to be of good cheer for He has overcome the world! - John 16:33

Prayer Response to the Word -
Abba Father, I come to You today as a humble dependent child seeking Your grace and mercy. I bless You for Your promise that You will never leave me nor forsake me. I am grateful that You are a faithful God who always delivers me from my troubles. In Jesus' name. Amen!

Special Prayer - the selling of our house in Austin! Please pray for Cory Forbes, our realtor and for God to bring a buyer....

My passion as Pastor of FBC

Today's Insight in the Word -
In Acts 6, we discover that the early church encountered problems in the midst of the mighty movement of the Spirit of God. There was a complaint among the widows in the church, so the apostles reasoned to the congregation, "It would not be right for us to give up preaching about God to wait on tables..... But we will devote ourselves to prayer and to the preaching ministry." (vs.2,4). This lead to the appointment of 7 spiritual men to serve this need among the widows which are called the office of a deacon.

Application of the Word to Life -
My passion as the pastor of Plant City's First Baptist Church is devoting myself to prayer and the preaching of the Word of God. I am called by God to serve the local church by the leadership of servant leadership on my knees and in the Word. Yes, I do visit the sick in the hospitals, comfort those grieving, share the Gospel at every opportunity, and minister to people individually.... But I cannot do it all. This is why God has given the office of the deacon and leadership to assist me and our pastoral team in ministering effectively to the numerous needs of the local body of Christ.
I can't wait to get on my knees and in the Word on your behalf this day to serve you in the preaching ministry of First Baptist Church!

As W. A. Criswell said to young preachers, "Give your mornings to God!"

Prayer Response to the Word -
Father God, I bless You for the high calling You have given to me to devote myself to prayer and the preaching ministry of First Baptist Church. I realize this is an ordained office that You have set me apart by Your amazing grace. I long to be a vessel of honor sanctified and set apart to the Master's service. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen!

Pray for me as I hear from God for this Lord's day from 2 Chronicles 7 & Joel 2.

Today is a day of Good News!

The Lord Jesus Christ is being exalted in the congregation of First Baptist Church! The Lord moved once again in a mighty way as we worshipped Him in Spirit and truth yesterday in our morning and evening services. It was a moving sight as we gathered around the leaders of our city to pray for the peace of Plant City in response to Jeremiah 29:7. It is "In God We Trust" for our community. Last evening was beyond words to describe as a large congregation returned and we worshipped together. We were able to celebrate our Centri-kids camp experience, encourage our Pastor's pals, and then hear God's message of Joel 1 - 'What to do when tragedy strikes a nation.' The Solemn assembly of prayer (as we gathered on our knees in every pew) was overwhelming with a sense of repentance and brokenness. God is moving mightily among us!
Thank you for celebrating with Liliana and me our 18th Wedding Anniversary. Wow! We are growing more in love with one another as the years pass, and I am so grateful for a godly help-mate to stand with me as I pastor the church. This is a picture of our family walking to church from our 'railroad' parking lot yesterday.

Today's Insight in the Word -
2 Kings 7:9 - the four leprous men who were starving discovered by faith God's miraculous victory over the enemy. As they by themselves were uncovering the riches left behind from the fleeing army.... they said to each other, "We're not doing what is right. Today is a day of good news. If we are silent and wait until morning light, we will be punished. Let's go tell the king's household."

Application of the Word to Life -
We are living in the day of Good News, for God has defeated our enemy - the devil, He has provided abundantly for our need through Christ, and He is the Bread of Life to us in salvation. We must not remain silent, but go and tell others who need what we have received in Christ.
Today I will use every opportunity the Lord gives me to share the Good News of Christ with others.

Prayer Response of the Word to Life -
Father God, I bless you for allowing me to live in the greatest day ever - the day of Good News! I am so thankful that everyone who calls on the name of Your Son, Jesus, will be saved. Anyone, anywhere, and anytime can be saved! Set my heart on fire with holy compulsion to share Jesus with everyone I meet today. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen!

Open the eyes of our hearts, Lord!

I have a holy expectancy of meeting God Almighty with His people today at FBC Plant City!
This morning we continue in the series, "In God We Trust," and tonight we begin studying "God's prophetic Alarm Clock" from the book of Joel.

Today's Insight in the Word -
2 Kings 6: 16,18 - Elisha's prophetic ability had caused the opposing king of Aram to send horses, chariots, and a massive army to capture and kill him. As Elisha's servant went out in the morning, he saw in fear that he and his master were surrounded by the opposing army. Elisha said, "Don't be afraid, for those who are with us outnumber those who are with them." Then Elisha prayed, "Lord, please open his eyes and let him see." So the Lord opened the servant's eyes. He looked and saw that the mountain was covered with horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha.
God blinded the army in responses to a prayer of Elisha and lead them into the city where the King of Israel captured them.

Application of the Word to Life -
I desire to live seeing the eternal activity of God all around God's people in His church. The reality is that God is for us, and if He is for us.. Who can be against us? God is the Lord of hosts, meaning all the angelic host of heaven with flaming swords are on our side!

Prayer Response to the Word-
O Father God, open the eyes of my heart and the eyes of the heart of Your church for us to realize all You power and presence that is for us. No matter what the physical eye may detect; it cannot perceive the spiritual forces of heaven. May I walk by faith and not by sight. In Jesus' name I humbly pray. Amen!

A sin we are all guilty of .....

God has blessed us with an incredible week at the Southern Baptist Convention in Louisville, Ky! Last evening we heard incredible works of God in North America from Geoff Hammond, the president of North American Mission Board of the SBC. God is moving in mighty ways through chaplaincy, church planting, and our over 5,000 North American Missionaries. It is amazing to be a part of something bigger than oneself!

Today's Insight in the Word -
2 Kings 1 - When Moab rebelled against Israel, King Ahaziah inquired of Baal-zebub, the god of Ekron... a major act of idolatry. Vs. 3 states, "But the angel of the LORD said to Elijah, 'Go .... ask..., Is it because there is no God in Israel that you are going to inquire of Baal-zebub, the god of Ekron?'"

Application of the Word to Life -
What sin did King Ahaziah commit that many times we are all guilty of? - i.e. - the sin of ungodliness... it is the sin of responding without regard for the presence, the power, the provision, the promise, and the person of the true and living God, who is the LORD Almighty.

Is there not a God in heaven... that we did not pray... or we had that attitude... or we said that word... or we had that meditation in my heart?

I recently read a very convicting book entitled, 'Respectable Sins' written by Jerry Bridges. He addressed this 'respectable sin of ungodliness,' when we live and act as if there is no God... primarily evident by a spirit of prayer-lessness.

Prayer Response of the Word to Life -
Father God, I confess the sin of ungodliness in my life... the times when I have responded without thought of you. Please wash and cleanse my heart that I may dwell in deep fellowship with Your Spirit. May every thought I think, every prayer I pray, every word I speak, every attitude I have be in full awareness of Your existence in my life. I pray in Jesus' name. Amen!

A great question for our day

The last several days I have been hearing message after message of God's Word being opened by Spirit-anointed preachers who are lifting up Jesus. Dr. Johnny Hunt, our SBC president & pastor of FBC Woodstock, brought a great message from the Lord concerning the state of our nation and our SBC denomination... calling for repentance and a resurgence of our Lord's Great Commission. 700 of our IMB missionaries will be sent home from the field because of a short-fall in giving from our churches. These are tough economic times... yet even though times are desperate, God's people are not. Dr. Hunt called us to give sacrificially as churches so that not only 700 hundred missionaries would not come home, but that 2,000 others who are waiting from our churches may be sent!

Today's Insight from the Word -
1 Kings 22:7 - In a very critical day when Israel and Judah were considering going out to war to fight the enemy together the king of Israel and King Jehoshaphat were seeking divine guidance concerning whether they should go out to war. 400 prophets had already prophesied to go out to war. Yet King Jehosophat inquired, "Isn't there a prophet of Yahweh here any more? Let's ask Him."

Application of the Word to life -
In a day of hundreds of lying voices who are claiming to speak for the Lord but are not, we need to ask the question, "Is there a Word from the Lord?" Just as there was the prophet Micaiah then, so there are faithful men of God today who will stand faithfully in the way of the Lord and proclaim God's Word.
I desire to a faithful preacher of God's Word proclaiming faithfully the Word of the Lord with the Spirit's power.

Prayer Response of the Word to life -
Word of God, speak! Pour down like rain.... Open my eyes to see Your Majesty. This is my heart cry, O Lord. In a world of deceiving voices, I desire to hear the One voice of truth, Your voice, O God. In Jesus' name I humbly pray. Amen!
